Where to throw it › Coffee capsules and pods
Where do coffee capsules go?
It depends on the material and the municipality: plastic or aluminium capsules often go in residual waste, certified compostable ones sometimes in food waste (umido).
What to do
- Empty the capsule: the coffee grounds go in food waste (umido).
- Check whether your municipality accepts them in mixed-materials collection or in a dedicated service; some manufacturers have their own take-back points.
What to avoid
- Do not put non-compostable capsules in food waste (umido): they spoil the compost.
Why it varies from municipality to municipality
It is one of the waste items on which municipalities give very different instructions. Each municipality chooses with its operator which bins to use and what can go in them.
This page summarises a general, cautious rule: the real rules vary from municipality to municipality and from operator to operator (colour of bags, accepted waste, days, collection points). If in doubt, what your municipality or the service operator indicates prevails.
Check your municipality's rules
Search for your municipality to see the collection calendar, the recycling centre's opening hours and, where available, the link to the official guide.
