Where to throw it › Used cooking oil
Where does used cooking oil go?
Used vegetable oil (from frying, from preserves) is taken to dedicated collection points: it must never go down the drain or in food waste (umido).
What to do
- Let it cool and collect it in a tightly closed plastic bottle.
- Take it to the recycling centre or to the used-oil containers, if your municipality has them (on the street, in supermarkets or at an eco-desk).
What to avoid
- Do not pour it down the sink, the toilet or onto the ground: it pollutes the water and damages treatment plants.
- Motor oil is a different (hazardous) waste: it does not go in the cooking oil containers, but to the recycling centre.
Why it varies from municipality to municipality
Where to take it varies from municipality to municipality: street containers, recycling centre, eco-desk or, in some cases, home collection. Each municipality chooses with its operator which bins to use and what can go in them.
This page summarises a general, cautious rule: the real rules vary from municipality to municipality and from operator to operator (colour of bags, accepted waste, days, collection points). If in doubt, what your municipality or the service operator indicates prevails.
