Where to throw it › Dog and cat litter
Where does dog and cat litter go?
It generally goes in residual waste, in a closed bag. Some compostable plant-based litters are accepted in food waste (umido) only where the municipality allows it.
What to do
- Close the bag tightly before putting it in the residual waste.
- Animal droppings should be collected and, generally, thrown in residual waste.
What to avoid
- Do not flush it down the toilet: even litters described as biodegradable can block the drains.
Why it varies from municipality to municipality
Few municipalities accept plant-based litter in food waste (umido): check first. Each municipality chooses with its operator which bins to use and what can go in them.
This page summarises a general, cautious rule: the real rules vary from municipality to municipality and from operator to operator (colour of bags, accepted waste, days, collection points). If in doubt, what your municipality or the service operator indicates prevails.
