Where does polystyrene go?
Packaging polystyrene (trays, fish boxes, appliance protectors) goes in plastic in many municipalities; in others in residual waste or at the recycling centre.
What to do
- Remove labels and food residue; reduce the volume by breaking it up, if needed.
- Check your municipality's calendar or guide to see whether it goes with plastic.
What to avoid
- It does not go in paper.
- Building polystyrene (insulation panels) is not packaging: ask the operator or take it to the recycling centre.
Why it varies from municipality to municipality
Some municipalities accept it with plastic only if it is clean packaging; others exclude it. Each municipality chooses with its operator which bins to use and what can go in them.
This page summarises a general, cautious rule: the real rules vary from municipality to municipality and from operator to operator (colour of bags, accepted waste, days, collection points). If in doubt, what your municipality or the service operator indicates prevails.
Check your municipality's rules
Search for your municipality to see the collection calendar, the recycling centre's opening hours and, where available, the link to the official guide.
